If you are concerned about the harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation on environment & health
On this page you can find articles, useful links and other resources on Building Biology, electromagnetic fields, the harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation on environment and bio physics.
“Building Biology” is an approach to the built environment that moves beyond purely ecological considerations to address its effects on mental and physical wellbeing. It draws on the contributions from all sciences to produce a set of planning standards which will support human health, emotional wellbeing and happiness as a consequence of their application to the built environment.
We spend 90% of our time indoors which means we are subject to chemical and electrical influences, as well as a host of other byproducts. Formaldehyde, fungus, mould, gases and poor air quality all place a burden on our biological systems.
The practice of “Building Biology” is one of continuous expansion and integration. Because of its multidisciplinary, multidimensional nature practitioners study the fundamentals and then choose one area in which to specialise.
My previous experience with electrical engineering led me towards a concern about the potentially harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation on environment and human health. So my specialism within this field is in electromagnetic fields in the indoor environment.
The WHO accepts that there is no doubt that short-term exposure to very high levels of electromagnetic fields can be harmful to health. But many people are concerned about the harmful effects of lower levels of electromagnetic radiation on the environment and their health. Over recent years, we have become exposed to many sources of electromagnetic fields in our daily lives. These include power lines, microwave ovens, computer and TV screens, security devices, smart home devices and mobile phones and phone masts.
However, a growing number of people are reporting a range of symptoms associated with EMF exposure including headaches, sleeping disorders, anxiety and other mental health problems like depression, nausea and fatigue. Some epidemiological studies have suggested an increase in risk of childhood leukemia with exposure to low frequency magnetic fields in the home. Further large scale international research is currently ongoing into possible links between cancer and electromagnetic fields at levels similar to power line and radiofrequencies.
An increasing amount of research indicates a variety of adverse biological effects on the human body which is triggered by exposure to man-made EMFs, especially those of radio frequency (RF)/microwaves and extremely low frequency (ELF). This is in contrast to natural EMFs in the environment which have always been present throughout human history and are part of the environment within which our bodies function naturally. For example, our bodies’ own magnetism plays a central role in the day-to-day bio communications of all cells and especially in the processing of autonomic information with regard to daily and yearly rhythms (Circadian Biology). That we, as electrical complex beings, are then immersed in non-native EMFs, including artificial light sources, means it is likely these immediate environmental conditions will have a biological effect. It is not just the strength of electric effects that can have an effect, but also their frequency.
